Hans Hornbostel crossed the Saipan Channel to Tinian by canoe, with a storm on his heels. By the time he waded ashore he wanted one thing: an “omang.”

He settled into the old palacio, the Spanish governors’ residence, and in broken Chamorro, with a good deal of pinching sign language, asked his Carolinian guide, Tamanging, to bring him omang that night. Tamanging left looking uneasy.

An Okinawan fisherman dropped by with fish pickled in wild orange juice, and Hans ate well. At dusk Tamanging returned, nervous, with four women.

To Hans, omang was Chamorro for hermit crab. To Tamanging, it was how you said the English word “woman.” The pinching had not helped.

Everyone laughed till they cried, then spent the evening over canned beans and American cigarettes, quizzing Hans about his trip.
